NEWH Magazine recently released its Summer Issue, featuring a 3-page spread on the newly constructed Marriott Irvine Spectrum. The feature covers the unique project approach, discussing the influence of history and technology on the design inspiration, with input from MONOGRAM Principal Kathryn Mickel. MONOGRAM served as the Interior Designer on the project.
An excerpt from the article:
For the 271-room hotel smack in Irvine’s cultural and entertainment center, Scottsdale, Arizona-based MONOGRAM Hospitality Interiors at BBGM turned to materials like rough-hewn steel, concrete, leather, stone, and wood to reimagine Irvine Ranch. “The interior design embraces the heritage of Irvine, recalling the bygone days of ranch life and juxtaposing it with a modern context and sensibility,” says the studio’s principal, Kathryn Mickel. “Weathered textures give greater emphasis to the nostalgic farmhouse references but contemporary elements like iron are blended into the design of the lobby bar.”
Creating an abundance of open, flexible spaces, such as the two-story fitness center with expansive windows that “breaks the mold of traditional gyms,” Mickel points out, was also important to the narrative. “Taking advantage of California’s fresh air and temperate climate, we maximized seamless interior-to-exterior living by replacing perimeter walls with operable window systems and incorporating expansive glazing walls,” explains Mickel. Drawing ample natural light, they conjure a “subtly freespirited, casual atmosphere,” she adds.
