BBGM was retained to create the new headquarters for the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD). SRCD planned to relocate its HQ from Ann Arbor, Michigan to Washington, DC in order to recognize efficiencies and achieve closer proximity to the National Institute of Health (NIH).
Through the meticulous process of discovery meetings with the executive team and design charrette sessions, the design team came to the conclusion that SRCD’s Workplace Strategy needed to address a wide variety of meeting types and work styles. Inherent in the nature of SRCD’s operations, meetings range from small, casual gatherings to larger scale board meetings which occur throughout the course of the year, in addition to flexible day-to-day workspace requirements.
The traditional reception area was eliminated to create a “living room” space situated adjacent to a large communal kitchen, complete with high-top table. This family-style living room environment became the focus of the space, taking on its own personality as the “village center”. The private offices are also designed to support the public areas, reinforcing the overall living room concept. The space is designed to allow board gatherings and open meetings, as well as small or private get-togethers in a relaxed, hospitality-inspired atmosphere.
Comforting and transparent, the living room and “village center” concept is balanced by modern furnishings to complete the design. Decorative panels and draperies complement the writable walls strategically placed throughout the interiors. Natural light permeates the space, from the private offices to the central lounge and pantry, complementing, reflecting and expanding off of the healthy use of glass in the new SRCD headquarters.

BBGM provided Architectural services for 13 U, JBG Smith’s newest multi-family mixed-use project, located in the U Street Corridor of Washington, DC – one of the hottest nightlife areas in the city.
BBGM, in conjunction with David M. Schwarz Architects, stepped up to deliver a high-end product that embodies the essence of U Street. Navigating a challenging process for the approval, design and planning stages, the development team managed to deliver a unique project that maintains the historical integrity of the overall neighborhood.
The high-end residential development offers 129 luxury units in a meticulously detailed brick and cast stone building, paying homage to the area’s rich architectural history with traditional charm. A series of setbacks and projections were created in the building’s façade to effectively break down the overall scale, creating a seamless addition to the U Street Historic District.
In order to attract the building’s target market, all members of the project team were challenged to deliver a residential product that would attract the most sophisticated tenants in an already competitive market. In addition to the task of delivering a successful luxury residential project, the team was also charged with the unique challenge of maintaining operations of retail outfits currently in operation while the building remained under construction.
The project team delivered.
Residents are drawn to a boutique-style living, featuring elegant finishes embraced by warm lighting. The intimate lobby is reminiscent of smaller high-end hotels, while the individual residential units are nothing short of spectacular. With an average unit size over 1,000 square feet and balconies or terraces in 60% of the units, the project team hit the mark for the high-end, sophisticated rental market, while successfully navigating project challenges.
Retail operations were also successfully maintained throughout the duration of the project, with the operating outlet being relocated to a complex throughout construction, and returning to a new turn-key store with upgraded finishes. Over 15,000 square feet of retail space occupies the ground floor, which is already 100% leased.
Residential units are leasing at a break-neck pace, well ahead of initial projections for the building. One of the penthouses has already been leased as well. JBG Smith is managing and leasing the building and has confidence that any decision to sell would beat their own records, and potentially those of the DC market in general.
Following its debut, the Paséa Hotel & Spa in Huntington Beach continues to garner press attention. The latest article from Hospitality Design goes into detail on design inspiration for the 250 ocean-view guestrooms and suites. MONOGRAM at BBGM Principal Kathryn Mickel provided additional insights on the essence of the design concepts, capturing the California allure of this newest addition to the Meritage Collection.

The design includes local artwork, distressed wood finishes, and teak accents. Included among the guestrooms are eight luxury one-bedroom suites and the 1,900-square-foot penthouse suite.

The Washington Business Journal walks us through a sneak peek of the renovation and repositioning of the former Savoy Suites, to the Kimpton Glover Park Hotel.
Led by BBGM, the renovation project entails a refresh of the guestrooms and public spaces, including an all-new lobby, restaurant, meeting spaces, and a 200-seat ballroom. As previously covered by Washington Business Journal, the hotel will also be home to one of DC's hottest new rooftop venues.

While the renovation of the rooms is complete — the hotel remained open during the revamp — some parts of the property are still a work in progress. The planned restaurant in the hotel, a coastal Italian restaurant from chef Michael Schlow, called Casolare, is set to open in July; and a 200-seat ballroom off the lobby, to be called the Walnut Room, isn’t quite finished yet. A lower-level gym space from Urban Athletic Club is also complete; hotel guests can work out there for free or join one of the classes at a discounted price, and the gym is also open to members from outside the hotel. The hotel is Kimpton’s 10th in the District and the first outside of the traditional urban core or other tourist-heavy neighborhoods such as Capitol Hill.

MONOGRAM began their designs for the project in 2014 and it involved 241 guestrooms, eight suites and one penthouse suite. The hotel offers several amenities including a spa, two restaurants, and a roof-top pool.
Huntington Beach is an emerging area rich in culture and offers many outdoor activities. The hotel’s owners are hoping that Paséa’s proximity to the pier and Surf City will draw some of the 16 million visitors the area receives each year. The hotel received high praise before it even opened its doors as CNN included it on its list of Best New Coastal Hotels.

The Hyatt House Hotel in Virginia Beach, designed by BBGM Architects & Interiors, is now open.
BBGM was the Architect and Interior Designer for the newest Hyatt House Hotel located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The newly constructed building consists of nineteen stories, an extended-stay hotel right on the boardwalk of Virginia Beach. The hotel offers 156 extended-stay guestrooms, a fitness center, indoor swimming pool, flexible meeting spaces, and dining facilities. The project entailed a custom design for its prime beachfront location. One of the unique design features focuses on the location of the bar, which has a vertically operable exterior glazing, creating a flexible space that opens up to become accessible directly from the boardwalk.
“The project has been very challenging since its frontage to the beach was narrow and the client requested a design that would offer ocean views from all guestrooms,” said Bahram Kamali, AIA, Principal-in-Charge of the project. “BBGM’s design solution delivered direct ocean views to all of the guestrooms while incorporating custom design elements to meet the client’s desired ambiance.”
27th Street Hotel Associates LLC as the owner and AHP Construction, LLC as the general contractor / design-builder worked with BBGM Architects & Interiors in creating this unique destination hotel that provides a fresh extended-stay option along the Virginia Beach shoreline.
